These are recreated trenches on the banks of the Ijzer Canal between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide. Even though there is no mud, the sand bags are reinforced concrete and there is no-one firing or throwing grenades, there is a strong sense of the horrific conditions that the soldiers fought in. This area was the heart of the Belgian resistance from 1915 until 1918. There is a visitor centre located here.
